Gordon Cheung

Überblick

Als Kunststudent am Royal Collage of Art in London fing Gordon Cheung an, über Konjunktur und Krisenzyklen des Wirtschaftsmarktes zu lesen. Mit der Immobilienblase und der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 wuchs Cheungs Interesse an der Entstehung von Blasen und führte ihn zu der ersten gut dokumentierten Spekulationsblase der Wirtschaftsgeschichte - nämlich die Spekulation auf Tulpenzwiebeln in den Niederlanden im 17. Jahrhundert.

„Tulipmania“ heißt seine Serie, die auf diese Spekulationsblase anspielt. Auch hier ist der Börsenteil der „Financial Times“ sein Malhintergrund. Die Vorbilder für seine Tulpen stammen aus den damaligen Verkaufskatalogen der niederländischen Tulpenhändler – die Schönheit der Blumen soll die Käufer anlocken. Besonders die seltenen, mehrfarbigen „geflammten“ Tulpen, also Tulpen die nicht einheitlich gefärbt sind, waren in dieser Zeit begehrt. Cheung steigert die Begehrlichkeit seiner Tulpen, indem er sie mit schillernden, halluzinogenen Farben ergänzt – sie kommen dem Betrachter entgegen und versuchen ihn zu verführen.

Gordon Cheung lebt und arbeitet in London, wo er auch aufwuchs. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in reommierten Sammlungen und Museen, wie zum Beispiel dem British Museum oder dem Museum of Modern Art (Moma) in New York.
