Überblick

Ein Basketball. Ein Wasserhahn. Eine Schubkarre. Alle haben eine Funktion, alle gehören mehr oder weniger zum Alltag dazu, so dass sie auf Grund ihrer selbstverständlichen Präsenz fast übersehen werden. Craig-Martin rückt sie wieder in unser Blickfeld. Mit brillanten Farben vor einem kontrastierenden Hintergrund wirken sie wie zweidimensionale Zeichnungen. 2015 sagte Craig-Martin in einem Interview mit der englischen Zeitung „The Observer“: „Wir suchen oft nach dem Besonderen in besonderen Objekten oder in besonderen Veranstaltungen. Aber wenn wir die Qualität einfacher Gegenstände verstehen, dann sind wir näher am Wesentlichen des Lebens.“ (Originalzitat auf Englisch: “We often look for the special in special objects or special events but actually, if we understood the quality of ordinary things, we are closer to the substance of life.”)

Geboren 1941 in Dublin, verbrachte er viele Jahre seiner Kindheit in Washington, D.C.. An der Yale Universität war er beeinflusst von den Farb- und Formtheorien Josef Albers, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt zwar nicht mehr dort lehrte, aber dessen Einfluss als ehemaliger Leiter des Art Department noch nachwirkte. Seit 1966 lebt und arbeitet Craig-Martin in London. Als Lehrer am Goldsmiths College in London beeinflusste er mehrere Generationen von Studierenden, u.a. Damian Hirst, Sarah Lucas und Tracey Emin sowie die von der DavisKlemmGallery vertretenen Künstler Julian Opie und Steve Johnson.

Seine Arbeiten finden sich in zahlreichen internationalen privaten wie öffentlichen Sammlungen, unter anderem in der Sammlung des Centre George Pompidou, Paris, dem MoMA in NewYork und der Tate Gallery in London.
