Mel Ramos initially took the inspiration for his early paintings from comic books. Somewhat later came the surreal combination of women in conjunction with oversized brand-name items. Art historical quotations also play a major role in his work. Picking up on comic book characters and advertising designs has maintained its impact to this day. Today, for example, superheroes are making a comeback in the cinema format, and the question of the representation of women in art, the depiction of nudity, and what is possible also seems to have not been conclusively resolved. Ramos' works confront the viewer with the question of how perspective has actually changed since the 1960s.
His works are represented in numerous renowned collections, including: Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Heinz Beck Collection, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Mel Ramos died in Oakland on October 14, 2018 at the age of 83.

Mel Ramos, who celebrated his 75th birthday in 2010, was not only a world-famous painter but also an outstanding draughtsman. In this exhibition, the DavisKlemmGallery showed original drawings from around 40 years on the occasion of his birthday.
